The Disney name invokes a sense of history and magic. The
studio is well known for it’s pioneering spirit and high quality work. It’s
films are award winning and wildly popular. Even films from over 50 years ago
remain relevant in today’s world, having withstood the test of time. With that
being said, many assume that Disney has had the academy award for best animated
feature category wrapped up for years. What people don’t realize is that until
this year, Disney hadn’t won an Oscar for this category.
The Academy Awards
were this past weekend and many great films were honored there. Among those
given awards was Disney’s latest animated film, Frozen. The category for best
animated feature is an award that is thirteen years old. In the past thirteen
years Disney had produced charming animations, but none of which have become
cult classics like the ones that were produced during the golden age or the
renaissance of the studio. Frozen was their first big hit since the nineties.
It’s box office numbers proved it this past week as the numbers rose past the
one billion mark. It is one of the few animated films to do so, and it hasn’t
even been released in Japan yet.
However all of this begs for the discussion,
what has the studio won all of its Oscars for? They have frequently won the
Oscar for best short subject in animation and live action, they have also
received the Oscar for best documentary on several occasions, and also the best
picture for films such as Mary Poppins. The list of academy awards is long, but
they made history with Frozen. Some say that Frozen is the beginning of a new
golden age for Disney and I think I have to agree. I look forward to seeing
their future successes and hope to see them take this award home more often.
